Canine Entropion Surgery
Advanced Canine Entropion Surgery
Entropion is an eyelid abnormality in which the eyelid turns towards the eye, allowing hairs and skin to repeatedly contact the delicate surface of the cornea. This can cause ongoing irritation and pain, and in more advanced cases may result in corneal damage and impaired vision.
At View Referrals, our veterinary ophthalmologists provide accurate assessment and canine entropion surgery, carefully tailoring treatment to your dog’s age, facial anatomy and individual needs. The aim is to restore a correctly positioned eyelid while protecting the eye from further damage.
Why Treat Entropion?
Although entropion can sometimes appear relatively subtle, constant contact between the eyelid and eye can be uncomfortable and may progressively damage the cornea. Early intervention can help prevent secondary eye disease and restore comfort before more significant problems develop. Entropion is particularly associated with certain facial conformations, although it can occur in dogs of many breeds and may also develop following changes to the tissues around the eye.
| Sign | What you might notice |
| Squinting | Squinting or keeping the eye partly closed |
| Tearing | Increased tearing or ocular discharge |
| Redness | Redness around the eye |
| Pawing | Pawing or rubbing at the face |
| Sensitivity | Sensitivity around the affected eye |
| Eyelid changes | A change in the way the eyelid sits against the eye |
How We Assess Entropion
Our ophthalmologists examine the eyelids and ocular surface to understand exactly how the abnormality is affecting your dog. We consider factors including facial structure, eyelid position and the health of the cornea before recommending treatment.
For many adult dogs, surgery provides a reliable way to reposition the eyelid and prevent further contact with the eye. In younger dogs, temporary correction may sometimes be appropriate while facial development continues. For selected older patients where anaesthetic considerations are important, non-surgical options may also be discussed.

Established Veterinary Ophthalmologists In Central Scotland
Twin brothers Michael and Richard decided at eight years old that they wanted to become vets. Around three decades later, that childhood ambition became View Referrals.
Michael graduated at the top of his veterinary class in 2006 and developed his ophthalmology expertise through referral practice and additional qualifications. Richard graduated with distinction in the same year and has since become an advanced practitioner in veterinary ophthalmology, with particular expertise in complex eye surgery.
Together, they bring decades of experience and a shared commitment to exceptional veterinary eye care.
