Dog Corneal Graft Surgery
When your dog has a serious corneal injury or disease that isn’t responding to standard treatment, a corneal graft may be the best option to save their sight and relieve their pain. At View Referrals, we perform advanced corneal grafting procedures for dogs across Central Scotland, using microsurgical techniques that deliver real results.
What Is a Corneal Graft?
A corneal graft is a surgical procedure used to repair or reconstruct damaged areas of the cornea, the clear outer layer of the eye. In dogs, this is most commonly needed when deep corneal ulcers, perforations or other serious corneal conditions fail to heal with medication alone.
During surgery, healthy tissue is carefully grafted over the affected area to restore the structural integrity of the eye and promote healing. The type of graft used will depend on the size, depth and location of the damage.
When Might Your Dog Need a Corneal Graft?
Corneal grafting is typically recommended for dogs with:
- Deep or melting corneal ulcers that are not healing
- Full-thickness corneal perforations
- Descemetoceles (where the ulcer has reached the innermost layer of the cornea)
- Corneal sequestra (more common in cats, but occasionally seen in dogs)
- Traumatic corneal injuries
If your dog is squinting, has a cloudy or discoloured eye, or is showing signs of pain, please speak to your vet as soon as possible. Early referral often leads to better outcomes.
Our Approach to Corneal Grafting
We use a range of advanced grafting techniques, including corneo-conjunctival transposition grafts, to treat even the most complex corneal conditions. Every procedure is carried out using state-of-the-art microsurgical equipment, and your dog will be looked after by either Michael or Richard McCallum throughout their care.
As a small, independent, family-run service, we are able to give each case the time and attention it deserves. We work closely with you and your referring vet to make sure you understand exactly what is involved, what to expect during recovery, and how to care for your dog at home.
