Conditions We Treat
Entropion
Entropion occurs when the eyelid rolls inwards, causing the eyelashes and surrounding hair to rub against the cornea. This can be extremely uncomfortable and may lead to painful ulcers or scarring if left untreated. Corrective surgery restores the eyelid to a more natural position.
Ectropion
With ectropion, the eyelid droops away from the eye, leaving the delicate surface exposed. Dogs with this condition are more prone to irritation, recurrent infections and chronic discharge. Surgery can improve eyelid support and better protect the eye.
Eyelid tumours
Many eyelid masses are benign, particularly in older dogs, but they can still irritate the eye as they grow. Careful surgical removal helps restore their comfort while preserving as much normal eyelid tissue as possible.
Ectopic cilia
Ectopic cilia are abnormal hairs that grow through the inner surface of the eyelid, resulting in hair that is constantly rubbing against the cornea. This is not only painful, but quickly leads to secondary corneal ulcers. Surgical treatment removes the affected hair follicles to reduce the risk of repeated corneal injury.
What To Expect
Before recommending surgery, our veterinary ophthalmologists perform a detailed eye examination to identify the underlying cause of your dog’s symptoms and assess the health of the entire eye.
Eyelid procedures are carried out under general anaesthetic using precise surgical techniques designed to preserve both eyelid function and appearance. Following surgery, most dogs return home with pain relief, eye medication where required, an Elizabethan collar to be used for a few weeks after surgery, and clear aftercare instructions.
Follow-up appointments allow us to monitor healing and ensure your dog’s recovery is progressing as expected.
