Tonometry is a quick, painless procedure that measures the pressure inside your cat’s eyes, and it plays a critical role in detecting conditions like glaucoma before they cause permanent damage to vision.

Cats are particularly good at hiding discomfort, which means eye conditions often go unnoticed until they have progressed significantly. Feline tonometry allows us to identify pressure changes early, giving your cat the best possible chance of keeping their sight.
What Is Feline Tonometry?
Tonometry is the measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP), which is the fluid pressure inside the eye. In healthy cats, this pressure remains within a normal range. When it rises above that range, it can indicate glaucoma, a serious condition that damages the optic nerve and can quickly lead to blindness if left untreated.
We use specialist veterinary tonometers to take precise readings in a matter of seconds. The procedure is non-invasive, requires no sedation, and causes no pain. Most cats tolerate it extremely well.
Why Is Tonometry Important for Cats?
Cats rarely show obvious signs of elevated eye pressure in the early stages. By the time symptoms such as a red eye, a dilated pupil, or visible discomfort appear, the condition may already be advanced. Regular tonometry as part of an ophthalmic examination allows us to catch these changes before they become irreversible.
Feline tonometry is especially important for cats with a history of uveitis (inflammation inside the eye), as this condition can lead to secondary glaucoma over time.
What Happens During Your Cat's Appointment?
Your cat’s consultation will typically last around one hour. During this time, we perform a full ophthalmic examination, which may include slit-lamp biomicroscopy, tonometry, and chromatic pupillary light reflex testing. We will explain every finding clearly and work with you to agree on the right course of action for your cat.
You will always see either Michael or Richard during your visit, so your cat receives complete continuity of care from start to finish.
